This website is a component of a semester long project completed by four college students at UMass Boston. Our hope, and the intention of this website, is to provide a judgment free space where people from all different backgrounds can come together to learn about and blend ideas regarding the issues of multiracialism and adoption. Our group had a particularly intimate connection with the project material, attributed to the fact that some of our group members are transracial adoptees. Given our backgrounds and interests, we felt inspired to explore the views and attitudes of multiracial experiences within the adoptee community. Beyond some of our own personal experiences, we have incorporated the views – via interviews – of four multiracial and four monoracial adoptees belonging to various “communities”.

Race is a social construct that creates a hierarchy with whites being dominant; therefore, race is discussed with white as the center and other communities as the margins. While most diagrams place the white “racial” category in the center, our intention is to de-emphasize this stratification of race that traditional diagrams stress, instead, focusing on how each “racial” group collectively contributes (both monoracially and multiracially) to the adoptee community. The sensitive nature of our topic makes tackling the use of terminology challenging. Nothing is meant to offend anyone; furthermore, the objective of this site is to challenge traditional views by sharing new experiences.)
